Abstract
686,081. Centrifugal pumps. HUMBLET, F. Sept. 8, 1950 (Sept. 10, 1949], No. 22205/50. Class 110(i) A centrifugal pump particularly for use ir fire fighting, comprises low and high pressure impellers on the same shaft and separatec from each other by a partition, the low pressure stage alone being connected to the suction chamber, while the outlet of the low pressure stage is con. nected to the inlet of the high pressure stage by a pipe which car be closed by a rotary plug valve. When a rotary plug valve 16 is in the position shown, the low pressure impeller 3 and the high pressure impeller 4 of a centrifugal pump are connected in series by way of a duct 20. Water can be drawp from a tank (not shown) by way of pipes 14. 12 or from a hydrant or other source connected to the pump inlet 9. The water is discharged at high pressure through an outlet 11 and, it may be, at low pressure through an outlet 10. If water at low pressure only is required, the valve 16 is closed, and any water which the impeller 4 contains is drained off through a duct 18 and the valve 16 so as to unload the impeller. The connection to the tank can be closed by a valve 13. In a further position of the valve 13, the connection to pipe 12 is closed and a connection to a pipe 15 is opened, permitting the tank to be refilled by the impeller 3. Each pump stage may comprise more than one impeller.
