Abstract

652,749. Centrifugal compressors. LAMMEREN, W. P. VAN. Jan. 26, 1948. No. 2251. [Class 110(i)] Air is circulated in a circuit by a fan; additional air, the temperature of which is regulated, is entrained into the circuit by means of an injector, and the velocity of the mixture so formed is decreased so as to increase the pressure and temperature; a quantity of air equal to that entrained is made available for external use and the remainder is returned to the fan to be recirculated. Air is circulated by a centrifugal impeller 2 through an injector 10, a non-return valve 12a, a diffuser 12 and a tank 13, and returns by way of a pipe 5 to nozzles 3 at the impeller intake. The nozzles may be rotatable and may be adapted to exhaust nearer to or at the impeller periphery. Additional air from an inlet 7 is entrained through injector vanes 11, and a corresponding quantity of compressed air is exhausted through a pipe 14. On starting, the tank 13 is filled with air at the desired pressure, stop valves 5a and 14a are closed, and the temperature of the air is then raised by suitable means. Then the impeller 2 is started and the stop valve 5a is opened. The entering air can be preheated by burners 9. The burners may be replaced by cooling means. In a modification, Fig. 2, an auxiliary impeller 22 is provided, and the mixing of the entrained and circulating air takes place before entering the main impeller. A single nozzle 20 is provided at the centre of the compressor housing 23 and the injector is formed by annular blades 21.
