Abstract
686,047. Gaskets for doors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 18, 1950 [Oct. 22, 1949], No. 25385/50. Class 20(iii) [Also in Groups XIII, XXV and XXVI] A door 34 is held in closed position by a plurality of permanent magnets 22 carried by a resilient gasket 11 which seals the door and is attached along one edge only to reduce the force necessary to open the door. The gasket may be arranged on the door or on the door frame 20 and contains a series of permanent bar magnets 22 arranged in spaced relation around the whole circumference of the door. A tongue 14 on the gasket is clamped against a flange 15 of the door by a strip 16 fixed by screws 18 and is integral with a flexible portion 19 terminating in two portions 23, 24 providing between them a recess throughout the length of the gasket with a continuous slit 25<SP>1</SP> for receiving the magnets 22 which are forced through the slit and resiliently held by the gasket. At the corners the gasket is notched and provided with L-shaped magnets. The door frame 20 is made of material of high permeability to form an armature for the magnets. The magnets may have ends of like polarity directed towards one another, and may be incorporated in the gasket during extrusion. When the door is open the gasket is held by the magnets firmly against the door and stray fields are avoided. In the closed position of the door the magnets are closer to the frame 20 of the cabinet than to the door 15. The flexible portion 19 between the fixing tongue 14 and the magnets enables the gasket to be peeled off the frame 20 on opening the door, as shown at 39 in Fig. 6.
