685,597. Making hollow-ware. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. June 18, 1951 [June 21, 1950], No. 14374/51. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Group XVII] Soldering and brazing; seamed joints.-In making an airtight metal can, the body and at least one end wall are flanged so that a soldered joint spaced from the can proper can be made between the flanges and soldering is effected by high-frequency induction heating. In an embodiment, Fig. 2b, seamed flanges are formed on the lid 12 and body 10 of a can and solder 13 is melted to seal the joint. The solder may be in the form of tin foil provided between the parts 10, 12 before forming the seam. The joint may be bent as in Fig. 2c after soldering. Heating is effected by a coil 17, Fig. 4, while rollers 18, 19 engage the body 10 and lid 12 during soldering. The rollers may be water-cooled and cooling of the joint may be during or after soldering. Non-seamed flanged joints are described.
