Abstract
546,815. Making electrical devices. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 22, 1941, No. 12223. Convention date, Sept. 21, 1940. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Soldering.-A sealed electrical device, comprising two container-forming iron parts joined vacuum tight and having lead-in conductors sealed through one of the parts, is made by copper plating the one part 11, sealing the conductors 21 ... 25 by applying fusible vitreous material 50, e.g. as described in Specification 536,362, [Group XXXVI], while the part 11 is at about 500 ‹C, removing the copper oxide, e.g. by a flux containing 3 parts of zinc chloride and 1 of ammonium chloride, and joining the parts by tin or solder melting at about 200‹C. The solder may be applied by dipping the other part 10 in molten tin or by electroplating it with tin before assembling the parts and the part 10 is supported by a magnet 41 outside the gas tight chamber 31 while it is evacuated and heated to at least 900‹C. by means of electric induction. The part 11 is supported and kept relatively cool by a ring 35, preferably magnetic. The part 10 is then allowed to fall on to the part 11 and, to ensure correct engagement, the base 32 may be rapped by a solenoid-operated mechanism.
