Abstract

805,660. Making composite sheets and bearings. BRENNAN, J. B. May 25, 1955, No. 15066/55. Addition to 734,275. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Soldering; welding by pressure.-In bonding two parts of dissimilar metal, the first part is heated over the whole of that face which is to engage the second part whilst cooling the whole of that face which will be directed away from the second part, the second part is heated over the whole of that face which is to be brought into engagement with the first part and then the two heated faces are brought and pressed together while cooling at least one of the parts over that face which is directed away from the other part. In an embodiment the surfaces 3, 4, Fig. 1, of two flanged tubular parts, 1 being of aluminium and 2 being of copper containing 20 per cent lead, are heated e.g. in a vacuum or inert atmosphere by flames 5 or by high-frequency induction, the parts being held in ceramic or metallic fluid cooled parts 6, 7. After heating the surfaces to 400-500‹ F., the softening temperature of the aluminium part, the parts are slid axially under pressure of 500- 1000 pounds per square inch into telescoping engagement and the parts may be rotated or twisted. When the surfaces 4 abut they are rotated relatively or twisted. Nickel, nickel and tin, tin, germanium, indium, silver, lead or iron powder may be applied to the surfaces 3, 4 of the part 2 by spraying or dusting and fusing the powder. Two split bushings which may or may not have their seams welded are similarly joined. Two strips may be slid over one another axially or may be relatively rotated on one another as in Fig. 5 to effect joining. Copper or bronze sintered liners may be joined to aluminium or steel sleeves, the liners being then impregnated with molten lead, e.g. in partial vacuum by dipping the composite body into lead protected by molten salt, e.g. potassium nitrate. The parts may be of tube produced by casting, turning or extruding.
