Abstract

A foam-inhibiting agent for addition to boiler water in the generation of steam comprises a non-ionic polyoxyalkylene glycol having an average molecular weight of over 1000 the agent being substantially insoluble under the conditions of steam generation. Preferred polyoxyalkylene glycols are polyoxyethylene glycol, polyoxypropylene glycol and polyoxyalkylene glycols containing both ethylene oxide and propylene oxide in the oxyalkylene chain. The agents may be added to the water as such or in association with tannin, sodium lignin sulphonate, desulphonted lignin, soda ash, and various orthophosphates and polyphosphates and if desired in briquetted form. Dispersants such as alkali metal soaps of oleic acid or tall oil or a sulphonated oil may also be incorporated. In water high in magnesium salts tannic acid, gallic acid, pyrogallol, catechol or phoroglucinol may also be added.
