Abstract

685,389. Displaying. WITTERN, H., and WITTERN, E. Sept. 7, 1950 [Sept. 22, 1949], No. 22078/50. Class 3 (i) [Also in Group XXX] In a conveyer of the kind consisting of platforms or carriers attached at each side to a paii of endless members so arranged as to keep the platforms or carriers in the same, e.g. horizontal, attitude, the connections of the platforms to the two endless members of each pair are changed at certain points of travel so as to compensate for a modified arrangement of the endless members. In one form applied to the display of articles in shop windows or for other purposes, two pairs of endless belts 6, 7 are mounted respectively on pulleys 4, 5 on a frame consisting of a pair of diagonal bars 3 secured to a wheeled frame 1, 2. Platform carriers 10 consisting each of two transverse tubular members 11 and two longitudinal members 12 support platforms 14 having a sloping back 15, and each tubular member 11 of each carrier is selectively coupled to either the two outer belts 6 or the two inner belts 7 by means of coupling rods 16 slidable in the tubular members and provided on each end thereof. Each rod 16, Fig. 5, is provided with a cut-out 19 and two slots 17, 20 for receiving the belts. Each belt is provided at intervals corresponding to the spacing of the tubular members with engagement pieces 18 for slidable engagement with the rods 16, which are preferably hollow for this purpose so as to facilitate the entering of the belts into the slots and also to hold the belts in fixed relation to the tubular members when so engaged. Grooves 28, 29 are provided on each rod within the corresponding tubular member, and these are engaged by a spring-loaded ball 27 on the tubular member when the rod is engaging a belt 7 or 6 respectively. The rods 16 are moved between the two engaging positions half-way along both upper and lower runs of the conveyer by means of switch levers 22, Fig. 6, which are pivoted to the frame at either side and provided with tail surfaces 24, 25. A roller 21 mounted on each rod 16 is forced by the switch to move the rod 16 to its other position whereupon the roller 21 engages surface 24 or 25, thus reversing the switch. By this means the rods 16 are moved alternately to left and to right, and thereby it is always arranged that the most forward tubular member of each carrier i.s supported by the belts 6 on both upper and lower runs during its passage around the end pulleys, while the rearward tubular member is supported by the belts 7. The conveyer may also be arranged by a suitable pulley arrangement to traverse several floors of a building.
