Abstract

684,880. Vacuum cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd., Sept. 8, 1950. No. 22189/50. Class 8 (i). In a vacuum cleaner in which an agitator 20 is driven by a belt 21 passing through the suction passage 12, the belt is removed from the pulley 19 when the cleaner is required for off-the-floor cleaning and the suction passage is sealed by a converter 55. The opening for the converter 55 is closed by a lid 48 connected by rods 52, 46 to an arm on a quadrant 34 that meshes with a pinion 33 attached to the member 32 for removing the belt from pulley 19 when the lid is lifted. The bottom of the converter has grooves 57 so that when inserted, the belt is pressed between these grooves and grooves 58 in the bottom plate 23 to complete the seal. The converter is held in position by a spring clip 59.
