Abstract

684,721. Projectile fuzes. VERWALTUNGSGES. DER WERKZEUGMASCHINEN-FABRIK OERLIKON. Oct. 25, 1950 [Nov. 24, 1949], No. 26053/50. Class 9(i) Projectile fuze adapted to be armed after launching has a body 1 screwed into the casing 2 and carries a detonator 3. The head 8 of a striker pin 5 held by a spring 6 is enclosed by a cap 7, which may be of synthetic plastic material. The body 1 is provided with a groove 4 in which is a slide 10 having a primer cap 11 at one end and a blind bore 12 at the other. A leaf spring 13 bearing against the casing 2 tends to move the slide to a position where the cap 11 is in alignment with the pin 5 and a relay charge 14 in an axial bore. through the body 1. In the safety position, Fig. 1, the slide is held by a pin 15 movable in a longitudinal bore but held by a safety pin 16 having a conical tip 17 engaging a conical bore 18 in the pin 15. The conicity of the tip 17 and bore 18 is such that lateral movement of the pin 16 can take place when pressure is applied to the pin 15. The pin 16 is held against movement by a sleeve 9 having a toothed rack 20 meshing with a pinion 21 connected to a spur gear 22 engaging an oscillator body 19. A plunger in the sleeve bore is fitted with a collar 26 against which bears a spring 24. On launching, the plunger slides rearwardly against the action of the spring 24 and the sleeve tends to move rearwardly, but is delayed until the oscillator 19 has been moved by the spur gear 22. When the sleeve reaches its final position, the pin 16 is released and pushed out by the pin 15 which then moves rearwardly and frees the slide 10. The spring 13 forces the slide transversely so that the cap 11 becomes aligned with the striker. The sleeve 9 and the plunger may be locked in the armed position by the pin 16 after the pin has been pushed partially from its hole. On impact the cap 7 is compressed and the striker forced into the cap 11 to ignite the relay 14 and explode the detonator 3.
