Abstract

683,865. Boundary layer control in wind-tunnels and diffusers. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. April 23, 1951. No. 9376/51. Class 4. The boundary layer of a fluid passing through a passage, such as a wind-tunnel or diffuser, is energized by vortices which promote mixing of the main stream with the boundary layer, such vortices being generated by members mounted on the wall of the passage and projecting into the main stream. The generators may consist of small aerofoil-shaped members 12, their tips, at which the vortices are produced, being located in the surface of separation between the main stream and the boundary layer. The aerofoils are mounted in circumferential rows and may all be arranged at the same angle of incidence to the main stream to produce vortices rotating in the same direction, Figs. 2 and 3, or preferably are arranged alternately at positive and negative angles of incidence to produce counter-rotating vortices, Figs. 5 and 6. In the case of a single row of aerofoils they are located at the separation zone. Fig. 9 shows an arrangement with three rows of aerofoils 12a, 12c, 12e of decreasing length in the downstream direction, the tips of the rearmost ring 12a being in the surface of separation between the main stream and the boundary layer.
