Abstract

683,742. Electric indicating systems. ALBAY, J. T. D'. Feb. 28, 1951 [March 9, 1950], No. 4811/51. Class 40 (i) [Also in Group XXXVI] A liquid level measuring head 1 comprises a manometer in which the liquid pressure head acts through ports 10, 11 on the underside of a diaphragm 6 on which rests a mercury column 13b. Variations in liquid level vary the height of the mercury column and hence the amount of a resistor coil 13a immersed therein. The resistor 13a is series connected with a heater coil 18 across a D.C. source, so that the heater current and hence the deflection of a bimetal strip 19 is priportional to the liquid level. The free end 22 of the bimetal strip operates an indicator 26 through a tensioned cord 23 wound around the indicator spindle. The pitch of the resistor coil 13a may vary in accordance with the shape of the liquid container and the air column above the mercury in the measuring head may be open to atmosphere or closed. The bimetal strip is made C shape to compensate for ambient temperature changes.
