Abstract

696,155. Electric temperature measurements. SANGAMO WESTON, Ltd. March 30, 1951 [June 22, 1950], No. 7459/51. Class 40 (i) [Also in Group XX]. A temperature-sensing device for determining the average temperature of a liquid body comprises a member adapted to be mounted, e.g. in a tank of liquid, so as to be movable within the liquid and having a temperature-sensitive element carried thereby and means for retaining the element immersed and extending throughout the depth of the liquid at all levels thereof. The member may comprise a hollow tube pivoted at its lower end to the bottom of the vessel containing the liquid and having at its top end a float pivoted thereto. An electrical resistance wire sensitive to temperature changes is contained in the tube and distributed throughout its length. Alternatively the tube may extend through the roof of the tank to a pressureactuated indicator and be filled with mercury or other suitable liquid having a relatively high coefficient of 'expansion with temperature increase. As shown in Fig. 6 a pantograph mechanism has one end pivotally attached to a support 62 on the bottom of the liquid containing vessel and a float 60 pivotally attached to the other end. Each arm of the pantograph carries a temperature-variable resistance coil 63, all the coils being connected in series to, e.g. a Wheatstone bridge to obtain an indication of the temperature.
