Indicators, electric.-The level of a liquid is measured by making use of the change of resistance of a wire surrounded by an electrically heated pipe partly immersed in the liquid. The wire c is connected to a source of current h through an ammeter g and an iron wire lamp e, and the voltmeter f indicates the voltage across the wire c. The surrounding pipe i is heated by current supplied from a source k through an iron wire lamp l which keeps it constant. The pipe i and wire c may be connected at one end. The voltmeter f indicates the resistance of the wire c if the current is kept constant, and the resistance varies with the mean temperature, which depends on the length of wire kept cool by the immersion of the surrounding pipe in the liquid. Errors due to changes of temperature in the container may be avoided by means of a counter voltage produced by a resistance subjected to the same temperature changes but not heated. If the voltage applied to the wire c is kept constant, an ammeter may be employed for indicating the liquid level.
