Abstract
683,455. Spray-producers. DE VILBISS CO. March 22, 1951 [March 22, 1950], No. 6970/51. Class 69 (iii). An automatic spray gun using air from a single supply hose for the atomising medium, and for motivating a piston operating a needle valve controlling spray material discharge, includes an atmospheric relief valve in the air passage to the cylinder of the said piston, the operating pressure of the relief valve being adjustable so that the cylinder is vented and the needle valve closed when the air pressure falls to a pre-determined minimum. The spray head 2, Fig. 1, is secured by a hollow connector 3 to the body 1 which includes a bore 9 for the reception of a gun mounting rod. The head includes a spray material inlet 18, Fig. 4, and a needle discharge valve 20 with a head 32 which fits within a front part 31 of a bore in a slidable trigger 30, Fig. 5. The body includes an air operated spring-loaded piston 25 secured to a rod 27 screwed to the trigger, an air inlet 6, Fig. 8, containing a spring-loaded air valve 29, and a spring-loaded check and relief valve 44 with an adjusting screw 57. When air is admitted to the inlet 6 it passes through a passage 41 and, when its pressure is sufficiently great, opens the valve 44 and passes to an annulus 47 and a passage 48, Fig. 5, to force the piston and trigger rearwardly. The trigger firstly strikes a rod 38 to open the air valve 29 and then opens the needle valve 20. Air then passes through passages, not shown, in the gun body to a passage 55, Fig. 5, and through the connector 3 to a passage 15 in the head. When the air supply is cut off, the check valve closes and air in front of the piston passes through the passage 48 and passages in the rear of the check valve to an outlet 59, and the piston and trigger move forward closing firstly the needle valve and then allowing the air valve 29 to close.
