Abstract

683,266. Variable-speed friction gear. DALL 'OLIO, V. April 5, 1951 [Aug. 1, 1950], No. 7906/51. Class 80 (ii). A continuously-variable friction gear comprises two opposite driving discs 11, 12 engaged alternatively by a series of driven rollers 17 rotatably mounted on an output shaft 19 and interconnected by gearing. The velocity ratio of the gearing between adjacent rollers is equal to the ratio of the minimum to the maximum velocity of the disc and roller. Two electric motors 1, 2 which drive the discs 11, 12 are mounted on a cylindrical housing 5 rotatable about a shaft 8 under the action of springs 13, 14 to equalize the pressure between the friction elements. End plates 6, 7 of the housing 5 support rotatably the output shaft 19 and a countershaft 22 carrying toothed gears 20, 21 which engage respectively gears 18 rigid with one roller 17 and gears 23 which drive, through a one-way clutch, an adjacent roller 17. The one-way clutches prevent the end rollers from attaining high speeds when the velocity ratio of the gear has a low value. A final reduction gear 24, 25 is provided between the end roller 17 and the shaft 19. The friction-roller-countershaft assembly is moved axially of the shaft 19 by means of a handle 30 and screw 31 to traverse the rollers 17 across the discs 11, 12, one roller moving out of engagement as the other moves in. An indicator, Fig. 3 (not shown), is provided to give warning when two rollers contact the discs simultaneously.
