Abstract

683,232. Roof ridge or hip member; glazing bar. HILL, A. B. Sept. 10, 1951 [June 10, 1950], No. 14530/50. Classes 20(iii) and 20(iv) A roof ridge or hip member of aluminium, or other extrudable metal, for use in erecting glazed roof structures, e.g. for skylights &c. and which dispenses with the necessity of applying flashing as weatherproofing comprises a stem 6 having flanges 4, 4 along its lower edge, flanges 5, 5 between the top and bottom edges, and lips 7, 7 along the upper edge. Glazing bars 3 are each slotted at 14, Fig. 6, at one end to receive a flange 5 and abut against the stem 6, the upper edges of the bars being protected by the lips 7, and the bases being bolted at 16 to the lower flange 5. The other ends of the glazing bars are connected to the frame of the glazing strucutre. Glass panes 10, each supported by the intermediary of oiled cords on the bases 15 of adjacent bars 3, extend between the flanges 4, 5, lips 8 on the flanges 5 bearing on the upper faces of the panes. A Y-shaped plate 12, Fig. 3, is bolted to the flat undersides 11 of a ridge member and two hip members to join them together, the joint being made waterproof by a sheet 13 which is folded over the flanges 5 and passes through, slots formed in the ends of hip and ridge members. The ridges are strong enough to support the glazing of skylights &c. but when used in a glazed roof structure the ridge is secured to the roof trusses by means of gusset plates. The flanges and hips of a ridge member are more steeply inclined than those of a hip member.
