Class 38 (v) [Also in Group XXXII] A dashpot (see Group XXXII) for providing a time-lag in the operation of over-current electric protective devices, which is normally an inverse function of the force applied to the dashpot piston by the armature of a relay forming the device, is so constructed as to produce a change in the function and a consequently reduced time-lag when the applied force exceeds a predetermined amount. The armature is associated with contacts which when closed, effect energisation of the trip-coil of a circuit breaker, or may be directly associated with the trip coil itself. Where the devices are connected in series a measure of discrimination in deciding the circuit-breaker to be tripped, is obtained, both for over-load currents and currents of short-circuit magnitude.
