Abstract

682,952. Liquid-fuel burners. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd. March 16, 1950 [March 23, 1949], No. 7979/49. Classes 75(i) and 75(iii) [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXIII] Air is tapped off from the compressor 6 of a gas turbine engine and supplied to a braking thrust producer 12 which comprises a combustion chamber 13 having a burner 14 supplied with fuel by an electrically driven pump 15. The fuel supplied to the burner 14 is ignited by a torch igniter 19 comprising an igniter plug 20 and a fuel jet controlled by a solenoid operated valve 22. The air supply through the duct 24 is controlled by a valve 25 operated by a lever 26. Movement of the lever 26 opens the valve 25 and at the same time completes the circuits of the fuel pump motor 16, ignition coil 21 and solenoid 23 so that valve 22 is opened and the fuel issuing from the jet ignited, which in turn ignites the fuel from the burner 14. The contact strips 28 associated with the coil 21 and solenoid 23 are shorter than that associated with the motor 16 so that the igniter 19 is only used for starting. The fuel pump 15 may be driven by the engine and may draw fuel from the engine fuel supply tank.
