[Class 75 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXVII] A flame igniter for igniting a continuous stream of fuel or combustible mixture in an internal-combustion turbine or jet reaction engine comprises a plug body adapted for mounting on the engine, a spark-gap within the plug body, a fuel supply passage formed in the plug body and terminating in a nozzle to direct a jet or spray of fuel or combustible mixture, independent of the stream of fuel or combustible mixture, across the spark-gap and a valve carried on the plug body adapted for operation at will to control the flow of fuel or combustible mixture through the passage from a pressure source of such fuel or combustible mixture. As shown, a plug body 10 has a chamber therein into which fuel is injected through a nozzle 21 onto or towards sparking points 11, 17. Electrical current is supplied to create a spark at the points 11, 17 thus igniting the fuel. The resulting flame ignites a main supply of fuel or combustible mixture. An electromagnetically operated valve 26 is situated in the fuel supply to the plug body and this may be arranged in circuit with the primary of an induction coil which supplies the electrical current so that the valve is open whenever the current is being supplied. Alternatively the solenoid 31 operating the valve may be controlled by a separate switch. An adjustable needle valve 22 is provided in the nozzle 21.
