Nov. 4, 1939, Nos. 29381 and 32208, [Classes 51 (i) and 55 (i)] Means for igniting or reviving the fuel in a gas producer, or for supplementing the gas produced, comprises a source of a combustible gas, of a spray or wick carburetter, the gas or inflammable vapour being burned in an air inlet tuyere, the flame entering the fuel bed. A jet 14, Fig. 1, is supplied with petrol or similar fuel from a float chamber 15, and the spray caused in the choke tube 13 is ignited by a sparking plug 17, the flame, produced with air entering below the jet, passing along a tuyere 11 into the producer 10. Unburned fuel or combustible gas may be carried into the fuel bed. A valve 19 in the position shown cuts off the normal air supply to the producer through inlet 11a, but when the fuel is alight, and producer gas is available, this valve is rotated to close the carburetter. This igniter may have thermostatic control so that it is brought into operation when the temperature of the fuel bed falls below a pre-determined minimum, and the valve 19 may be inter-connected with a switch controlling the ignition circuit. In Fig. 3, between a casing 20 and a perforated sleeve 21 is an annular wick 22 dipping into liquid fuel in the base of the casing. The upward current of air entrains the vaporized fuel which may be ignited by a hot wire plug 18, the flame passing, as above described, into the tuyere 11. In a modification, an igniting spark may be produced by an insulated electrode inside the perforated tube 21, and, in another modification, the liquid fuel may be supplied under pressure by an injector. The igniter may also include a water "carburetter" having its jet or nozzle exposed in the air inlet conduit. Specification 535,706 is referred to.
