Abstract

682,531. Bearings. COLLIS & SONS, Ltd., J. Feb. 15, 1951 [Feb. 24, 1950], No. 4787/50. Class 12 (i). A ball-bearing comprises an outer race which is internally provided with a radiused bearing surface to enable the bearing to be self-aligning, said bearing-surface being of a diameter slightly larger than that of the circle of the contact-points of the balls which come into contact therewith, and being flanked on either side by inwardly-projecting peripheral flanges, an inner race comprising a pair of truncated cones united apex to apex, and a plurality of balls between said inner race and said outer race. The bearing comprises an outer race 12 formed with a radiused bearing track 11 to permit alignment of the housing, the track being flanked by flanges 13. The inner race is formed from two truncated cones 15, 16 firmly united by a flanged bush 17, the inclined faces of the cones being preferably set at 45 degrees to the axis of the bearing. To enable the bearing to take end thrust the flanges 13 are bevelled at 14 substantially parallel to the faces of the cores and the diameter of the track in the outer race is slightly larger than the diameter of the outer circle of contact of the balls 10.
