Abstract
682,155. Aerials. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Nov. 4, 1948 [March 18, 1948], No. 8164/48. Drawings to Specification. Class 40 (vii). An aircraft aerial comprises a conductive plate or mesh arranged flush or nearly flush with the surface of the aircraft and having dimensions small compared with the operating wavelength. In one embodiment, the aerial comprises an insulated metal plate set into a recess cut into the aircraft skin. The space separating the plate from the surrounding skin is filled with solid insulating material and the plate is covered with insulating material to prevent interference caused by static discharge. In an alternative arrangement a grid or mesh of wires is used; this may be fitted to the windscreen or windows or enclosed within the material thereof, in which case it may also supply heating current for de-frosting purposes. An aerial fitted to a window may comprise a layer of a conducting varnish, liquid or solid which does not seriously impair visibility. Specification 647,665 is referred to.
