Abstract
681,969. Moulding shoe soles from synthetic resin. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). April 12, 1951 [April 13, 1950], No. 9085/50. Class 87 (ii). A sole-and-heel member of synthetic resin, e.g. a polymer or co-polymer of vinyl chloride, is moulded onto the bottom surface of a shoe, a fluid paste dispersion of particles of the resin being heated sufficiently in the mould to enable it to retain its shape and adhere to the shoe bottom, final solidification being effected by heating outside the mould. During the moulding, the shoe upper 10 including insole 14 is held in position on a heated mould 24 by means of an articulated retaining ring 26 connected to a press beam 30 by means of a frame 28. Fluid or pasty resin dispersion is introduced into the mould through an opening 46 which is then closed by a spring-actuated shutter 50. The shoe and the adhering sole are removed from the mould after a shape-retaining shell has formed on the surface of the sole. The shoes are then passed on a conveyer under a number of infra-red lamps which complete the curing of the resin. Alternatively, curing may be effected in an oven, or by high-frequency heating. Before the sole is finally cooled a pattern may be applied by rolling a fluted roller along it.
