Abstract

640,366. Presses for moulding soles and heels on to footwear uppers. SPENCER & SON (WATERFOOT), Ltd., W., and SPENCER, T. Aug. 28, 1947, No. 14150. [Class 87 (ii)] In a press for moulding a sole or sole and heel of a mouldable composition, with or without an insertion, and bonding it to a pre-formed upper, the bottom of the mould consists of a former or last D<SP>1</SP> adapted to receive the upper d<SP>1</SP>, the sides of the mould comprise a member El having an aperture corresponding in size to the sole &c. and secured to a sliding plate E, and the top of the mould F<SP>1</SP> corresponds in contour to the wearing surface of the sole &c., the last D<SP>1</SP> being secured to a rod C<SP>2</SP> which is actuated by hydraulic, pneumatic or other means to move the last into engagement with the member El and then to carry the last and member E<SP>1</SP> to the top F<SP>1</SP> of the mould, the sides of the member E<SP>1</SP> passing over the edges of the top F<SP>1</SP> so that pressure is applied to the sole &c. H in the mould (Fig. 6). The plate E carries vertical guides e co-operating with the edges of a platform D to which the last D<SP>1</SP> is secured. Correct location of the last is ensured by a spigot d. The top pressing member Fl is connected to a hollow plunger F which is slidably mounted in a fixed crosshead F<SP>2</SP> and houses the end of a spring G. The final moulding pressure may be varied by varying the strength of the spring G. Springs a which are compressed during the moulding operation assist in the subsequent opening of the mould when the plate E and last D<SP>1</SP> are lowered. Alternatively, the finished article may be ejected upwardly. The mould can be made to open to assist ejection. The members Fl and El are hollow, so that heating and cooling media may be circulated in them.
