Abstract

768,375. Vulcanizing rubber soles to uppers. SOC. PER AZIONI. A. FERRARI & FIGLI. Sept. 9, 1954, No. 26192/54. Class 87(2). A toe cap and heel counter are vulcanized on a canvas upper at the same time as is the sole by apparatus comprising a last 14, jaws 19, 20, having upwardly-extending parts 21, 22 which form the cap and counter, and a lower mould part 3. The part 3 is fixed on a stationary bed 2. The last and jaws are secured to a plate 13 pivotally mounted at 12 on rods 10 secured to a crosshead 10. The plate 13 can be turned about a horizontal axis through 180 degrees so that the last and jaws may face upwardly, for fitting the upper onto the last, or downwardly as shown. The jaws are adjustably pivoted at one side on a rod 15 depending from the plate 13, and, when the plate faces upwardly, are clamped on the upper (on the last) by means of a locking rod 23. The jaws are also forced towards the last by means of a screw-actuated rod 16, acting on the other side of the jaws. Then a mass of crude rubber is placed on the part 3, and the plate is turned to the downwardlyfacing position shown and lowered by actuation of a pneumatic piston 5 which depresses the crosshead 6. The parts 3, 14, 19, 20, 21, 22 are thus brought together to form a moulding space, and heat is applied to cure the rubber. The piston 5 is then reversed, to allow the plate to be raised by springs 30.
