Abstract

705,538. Moulding rubber soles on to footwear. SUPERGA SOC, PER AZIONI. March 27, 1952 [June 4, 1951], No. 7932/52. Class 87 (2) A press for moulding and vulcanizing a rubber sole directly on to the upper of a shoe comprises a-fixed mould having moulding surfaces for both the underside of a sole and also the edges thereof, and a last incorporated in the press and moved by pneumatic or hydraulic means between a withdrawn position, at which an upper may be mounted on it and a shoe taken off it, and a position in which the upper on the last is forced against the sole in the mould with. sufficient pressure for the vulcanizing operation. The mould 1 is fixed to a frame 2 which incorporates a vertical cylinder 3 housing a piston 4. The upper end of the piston rod 7 carries a bracket 9 which carries the last 16 and is bored for a plunger 10. The last 16 is carried from a pivot 14 on the bracket 9 and has rigid with it a pinion segment 13 which meshes with a rack 12 on the plunger 10. The rubber sole is placed in the mould 1 and the upper on the last 16 and compressed air or liquid under pressure is admitted to the top of the cylinder 3, causing the piston rod 7 to descend, carrying the bracket 9 and the last and upper with the result that the necessiary pressure is applied to unite the upper and the sole. After vulcanization pressure fluid is admitted to the bottom of the cylinder 3 and the last 16, with the shoe in position, rises with the bracket 9, the upward movement continuing until a roller 19 on the end of the plunger 10 meets an inclined arm 18 and the plunger I is therefore forced to the left (as seen in the Figure) against a spring 11 and the rack 12 rotates the pinion,13 and causes the last to turn on the pivot 14 to an inverted position convenient for removal of the shoe.
