681,101. Locking nuts. ELASTIC STOP NUT CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Jan. 11, 1950 [Jan. 12, 1949, Dec. 20, 1949], No. 710/50. Class 89 (i) Relates to locknuts of the type in which a coned inner threaded member is contracted on to the bolt member by an unthreaded outer bearing member and consists in a detailed construction whereby overtightening of the nut is prevented, the end of the inner member is prevented from touching the bearing surface, and repeated use is possible. The inner member has a polygonal head portion 14, Fig. 2 and a conical part axially slotted at 18. One of the slots may extend across the head portion also. The outer member has an internally coned bearing part 32 with an extension 42 shaped to fit the polygonal part of the inner member and flanged in at 50 to prevent separation of the parts. Shoulders are formed on the two parts at 28 and 46 and these shoulders engage in the locked position of the parts to prevent overtightening of the nut and contact of the inner member with the bearing surface. The angle of the cone is preferably between five and ten degrees and that of the outer member exceeds that of the inner by two degrees. In a modification, particularly for deep nuts, the head and conical skirt of the inner member are separated by a cylindrical portion, a corresponding portion, having slight clearance, being formed in the outer member. In a further form splines in the outer member engage grooves on the head of the inner member.
