Abstract

Spent Fuller's earth containing oils, fats, waxes, colouring matter &c., is regenerated by extracting it with a solvent consisting of petroleum spirit or another volatile hydrocarbon of the non-aromatic type until the bulk of the solvent-soluble substances have been removed, and then introducing water or steam into the residual material soaked with the solvent used, adding fresh solvent of the same kind and heating nearly to the boiling point of the solvent used. The first extract is pale in colour and contains mainly the bleached substances; the second extract is dark and contains the colouring matter; this extract is decanted as a supernatant layer. The Fuller's earth is then freed from solvent and fully reactivated, if desired, by the usual acid and calcination treatments. The spent Fuller's earth treated may be a mixture with other decolourising materials such as carbon; excessive moisture may be removed therefrom by drying prior to extraction. Specication 526,237, [Group VI], is referred to.
