680,852. Alternating current commutator machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 17, 1950 [July 27, 1949], No. 17820/50. Class 35. A dynamo-electric machine comprises two axially-disposed stator cores 28, 29 magnetically linked with corresponding core portions of the rotor, the stator core 28 carries an A.C. control winding 32 and a compensating winding 33 which is connected to the rotor commutator 35a via normally stationary brushes 36, and the stator core 29 carries an A.C. power winding 34. Fig. 4 shows the connections for the above arrangement which includes a control device 19. The machine can be used either as an exciter machine and motor in which the speed is altered by varying the control device 19 or as an exciter machine and an adjustable frequency generator, the frequency of which is adjusted by making the control device 19 a variable frequency device. In each of these two alternatives, the exciter part is that part of the machine associated with the stator core 28. Instead of using a unitary machine as an exciter-motor or exciter-generator combination, two separate machines 10 and 11 can be used as in Figs. 1, 2 (not shown).
