Abstract

680,439. Electromagnetic clutches and brakes. SAMPIETRO, A. C., and ROBERTSON, Ltd., D. R. June 27, 1950 [July 4, 1949], No. 17639/49. Class 35. A slip coupling for use as clutch or brake of the kind having a rotating member which is heated during operation is cooled by providing at least one side of the driving member with impeller, e.g. vanes 20 co-operating with a fan chamber 23 having a number of delivery helical ducts around the casing with outlets 24 which discharge air radially inwards against the periphery and circumferentially of the rotary member during its passage from the delivery ducts to the exhaust ports. The cooling air enters the casing at a central aperture 22 and finally leaves the machine through exhaust ports 25 provided in the casing between the outlets 24. The driving member includes a two-half hollow iron armature 15 fitted by shrinkage into a hollow cylindrical member 16 made of a relatively high heat conductivity material and also made in two halves. The driven member has a D.C. excited coil 11 mounted on an annular core 10 having a channel section each side wall of which has a ring of uniformly-spaced polepieces 12 staggered with respect to those of the other ring. The polepieces 12 have fingers 13 arranged to be interdigited.
