Abstract

709,162. Eddy current brakes. ELECTRO-MECHANISM DE L' AVEYRON. May 23, 1952 [Jan 17, 1952], No. 13174/52. Class 35 An eddy current brake has a 2-disc rotor mounted on a shaft between two stator members, the discs being spaced from each other but having axially inwardly projecting lugs at their periphery. The discs also have apertures near the shaft to allow cooling air to flow from the two helical fans mounted on the shaft one at each side of the rotor. Fig. 1 shows rotor spaced discs 5a, 5b on a common shaft 4. The discs have apertures 6a, 6b so as to enable cooling air to flow radially from fans 15a, 15b located on either side of the rotor, Fig. 7. The rotor discs 5a, 5b have these constructional features: stiffening ribs 10a, 10b, inwardly projecting lugs 7a, 7b joined by bolts 9, fan blades 11a, 11b at the peripheries of the discs, and hubs 5<SP>1</SP>a, 5'b. In order to facilitate the flow of air from the helical blades 17a, 17b of the fans 15a, 15b, the arms 14a, 14b which are holed with apertures 6a, 6b are given an elongated section with a main axis a-a, Figs. 8, 11. The stator poles 1 are mounted on plates 2 which are cooled by external fans 23 located at each end of the shaft 4. The plates 2 have air intakes at their periphery at 12 or near the bearings 3. The direction of the flow of cooling air inside the apparatus is shown by the arrows in Fig. 1.
