Abstract
680,048. Straightening; winding. NATIONAL MACHINERY CO. July 5, 1950 [July 9, 1949], No. 16777/50. Class 83 (iv). In an apparatus for straightening the end portion of coiled stock for feeding to a metal working machine the end of the stock is clamped to a hinged anvil and the coil moved to unwind a portion of stock and the anvil is tilted to straighten the stock. The coil is then swung into alignment with clamps which position the stock for entry into a metal-working machine. The coil W is carried on a drum 27 with collapsable arms 23 on a shaft 22 mounted on a turntable 20 on a carriage 18 traversed by a hydraulic cylinder 13. A clamping device 31 comprises an anvil member 32, slidable along a shaft 34 for alignment purposes, carrying a clamping jaw 42 operated by a hydraulic cylinder 36 and toggle mechanism to secure the stock to the anvil. After the stock is secured the carriage 18 is moved to the left, Fig. 1, to unwind a portion of stock and the anvil is tilted by cylinder 37 to straighten the stock. The clamp 42 is then released and the turntable swung 180 degrees by releasing a pin 28 to align the straight end of the stock with a clamp. This clamp, Fig. 2 (not shown), is actuated by a jack powered by a foot pump to secure the end of the stock and is adjusted for height by a screw and transversely on a horizontal pin by worm gearing to align the stock with the metal-working machine. The hydraulic cylinders may be controlled from a valve panel.
