Abstract

614,205. Moulding - machines. EDWARDS, A. V., and SHORT, A. July 8, 1946, No. 20383. [Class 83 (i)] A pattern-drawing machine comprises a hooped frame 11, Fig. 5, which is rotatable about a horizontal axis and has a roller track 18 to receive a pattern plate 25 and flask 26, means 23, 24 for separately clamping these to said track, and an inverted track 20, and verticallymovable means 45 adapted, when the frame 11 has been rotated through 180 degrees from its normal position, to be raised to receive the inverted mould, Fig. 7, and lower it on to the track. The sand is rammed into the flask in any suitable machine and the plate 25 &c. is fed along the roller track 22, Fig. 1a, onto the track 18 and between guides 64. A valve 57, Fig. 4, is then moved from " off " position to the "clamp mould position in which it supplies compressed air to cylinders 28, 30 to close four clamps 23 and four clamps 24. A switch 54 is then closed to drive an electric motor which acts through reducing gearing 33, Fig. 1b, and pinion 35 to rotate the frame 11 through 180 degrees, a cam 38 tripping a switch 37 to stop the motor and applying an electromagnetic brake. A plate 65, Fig. 7, is then slid onto the track 20 and a valve 58, Fig. 4, is moved to admit air to a cylinder 39 and cause a telescopic plunger 41 to lift the head 45 and the plate 65 into contact with the mould, spring pressed plungers 46, Figs. 1a and 1b, which actually engage the plate 65, yielding as necessary so that each takes part of the load. The valve 59 is then moved to supply air to the inside of the plunger 41 to lift a piston 49 and cause arms 50 to press friction blocks against and thus hold the plungers 46 in their equalised position. The valve 57 is then moved to release the flask clamps 24 while keeping the pattern plate 25 clamped so that flask and mould are supported only by the plate 65. The valve 59 is then moved to actuate vibrators, not shown, on the plate, while still keeping the plungers 46 rigid. The valve 58 is then moved to exhaust the cylinder 39 and lower the mould &c. from the pattern onto the track 20 whence it is slid out onto the track 22 for coreing &c. The vibrators are then stopped and the switch 55 operated to rotate the motor and frame in the reverse direction until this is stopped in its original position by a cam 38<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1b, and switch 37. The valves 57 and 59 are then moved to their off positions and the plate 25 removed. The handles of the valves 57 and 59 are arranged so that they prevent the operation of the switch 54 when the clamps 23, 24 are open and of the switch 55 if the valve 59 is in its off position.
