679,770. Heating by chemical action. EUGENE, Ltd. April 26, 1951 [June 22, 1950], No. 15582/50. Class 64(ii) To control the generation of heat by a ,chemical heating device comprising a solid reagent and a liquid reagent other than water, a hydrate is mixed with the solid reagent. The mixture of the hydrate and the solid reagent in powder form is enclosed in an envelope which has at least one portion pervious to the liquid reagent. An inert filler, e.g. talc or kaolin, may be added to the mixture. The envelope may comprise metal foil on one side and absorbent paper on the other. The solid reagent may be potassium permanganate; the hydrate may be tribasic sodium phosphate (Na 3 PO 4 , 12H 2 O), hydrous dibasic sodium phosphate (Na 2 HPO 4 .12H 2 O), sodium sulphate decahydrate (Na 2 SO 4 . 10H 2 O), or sodium sulphite heptahydrate (Na 2 SO,. 7H 2 O); and the liquid reagent may be a polyhydric alcohol, e.g. glycerine or ethylene glycol, which may be diluted with water. Examples of proportions are given.
