Abstract

1426801 Spherical filler PHILADELPHIA QUARTZ CO 5 Feb 1973 [3 Feb 1972 (2) 17 March 1972 12 May 1972] 5555/73 Heading C1A A hollow sphere suitable for use as a filler in polymer compositions comprises the reaction product of a polyborate or polyphosphate and an alkali metal silicate in which the weight ratio of polysalt solids to alkali metal silicate solids is 0À02-3À0 : 1 0. The alkali metal silicate may be sodium silicate having an SiO 2 /Na 2 O weight ratio of 1À5-4À0 : 1À0 or potassium silicate having an SiO 2 /K 2 O weight ratio of 1À5-4À2 : 1À0. The preferred polysalts are ammonium pentaborate, in which case the ratio of pentaborate to silicate is 0À03-0À5 : 1À0; sodium pentaborate, in which case the ratio of pentaborate to silicate is 0À02-0À3 1À0 or sodium hexametaphosphate in which case the ratio of metaphosphate to silicate is 1À0-3À0 : 1À0. The spheres may be made by a spray drying process as described in Specification 1,426,802. The dry cells preferably have a water content of 0À5-4À0%. The spheres may be coated with a silicone resin before incorporation into a polymer composition.
