1426802 Making spherical filiers PHILADELPHIA QUARTZ CO 5 Feb 1973 [3 Feb 1972 (2) 17 March 1972 12 May 1972] 37192/75 Divided out of 1426801 Heading C1A A spherical filler is made by reacting, in solution, a sodium silicate characterized by a SiO 2 : Na 2 O weight ratio of 1À5-4À0 : 1 and a Na 2 O content of 5-20% or a potassium silicate characterized by a SiO 2 : K 2 O weight ratio of 1À5-4À2 : 1 with a polyborate or polyphosphate in such a way that formation of localized pockets of irreversible gel is avoided, the ratio of polysalt : silicate solids being 0À02-3À0 : 1, withdrawing a liquid stream from the reaction vessel at below its boiling point, spray drying the liquid stream to form a mass of hollow spheres of moisture content less than 25%, drying the spheres at 70-400‹ C. for a time sufficient to reduce the moisture content to 0-7% and recovering a mass of hollow spherical particles having a bulk density of 2-30 lbs./ft.<SP>3</SP>: particle size within the range 10-400 mesh and a moisture content of 0-7%. Preferred polysalts are ammonium or sodium pentaborate and sodium hexametaphosphate.
