Abstract

Agglomerates consisting wholly or mainly of alumina and carbon are formed by adding an alkaline solution to a homogeneous powdered mixture of the alumina and carbon and then granulating and drying the resultant paste. The powders are preferably finer than 150 micron and the ratio of alumina to carbon may be in the stoichiometric ratio for the reduction of the alumina. The alkaline solution may be an aqueous solution of sodium or potassium hydroxide containing 200 to 400 gms. of hydroxide per litre or an aqueous solution of sodium aluminate and sodium hydroxide and 5-20% by weight of the solution is added to the alumina-carbon mixture in an inclined rotatable mixer containing a granulating disc or drum. The granules are dried at 100-200 DEG C. The carbon used may be charcoal, petroleum coke, coal or a caked carbohydrate. Specification 868,301 is referred to.
