Abstract

1462012 Amorphous silica MONSANTO CO 20 Jan 1975 [21 Jan 1974 (2)] 2329/75 Heading C1A [Also in Division A5] Synthetic amorphous silica having a refractive index from 1À410 to 1À440 is prepared by reacting particulate hydrous alkali metal silicate containing 10-25 wt. per cent of water with aqueous acidic solution containing hydrogen ions in excess of the quantity required to replace essentially all the alkali metal ions by hydrogen ions, allowing sufficient time for the exchange, and recovering and drying the silica particles produced. The particle diameter as initially produced varies from 1-300 Á and may be ground to average particle diameter of 1-30 Á. The alkali metal silicates generally have an SiO 2 /M 2 O ratio of from 1À60 to 3À75. The amorphous particulate silica may be used as a polishing agent together with a liquid phase of the same R.I. comprising water and a humectant (e.g. sorbitol, glycerine) to form a translucent dental cream, or it may be used as part of the polishing agent in opaque dental creams which may contain other polishing agents such as dicalcium phosphate, flavourings, fluoride ions, and suitable sudsing agents.
