Abstract

679,541. Textile drafting apparatus. FINE SPINNERS & DOUBLERS, Ltd. Aug. 26, 1949 [Sept. 4, 1948], No. 23323/48. Class 120(ii) Drafting apparatus of the type in which an intermediate roller takes the form of a disc that is pressed into a groove of another intermediate roller has the axes of the two intermediate rollers arranged perpendicular to the axes of the front rollers so that the intermediate rollers may enter into a zone at the rear of the front rollers which is bounded by the surfaces of the front rollers and a plane tangential to these rollers. In a preferred form, a roving may be fed by a grooved lower roller U and a disc-like upper roller V to the intermediate rollers v<SP>1</SP>, v<SP>2</SP> which may be adjusted relatively to the front rollers by a screw A that rests against a neck L on the lower front roller shaft. Intermediate roller v' is grooved and its associated roller v<SP>2</SP> is spring-pressed into the groove. A spring c<SP>3</SP> may be used to hold rollers v<SP>1</SP>, v<SP>2</SP> in their forward position. Two pairs of rollers v', v<SP>2</SP> may be mounted together in a cradle C, consisting of a metal sheet with its ends turned at right angles and pierced to form bearings for the vertical shafts S of the rollers, the shafts of rollers v<SP>1</SP> passing through holes, and those of rollers v<SP>2</SP> through slots providing lateral movement. Hooks pass round shafts S of rollers v<SP>2</SP> and are connected by a spring the vertical positions of the hooks and springs being adjustable to vary the pressure of the rollers. The shafts S are geared together by pinions P and are driven by worms W. The worms W may be fixed to a splined shaft that may be traversed with the roller cradles, or two worms may form a unit slidable on a worm shaft and receptive of rotary motion through a pin and slot connection. In another modification worm wheels may ride over the worms as the former are traversed. According to the Provisional Specification, the intermediate roller drive may be derived from a shaft carrying wide pinions which engage a pinion on a countershaft of a cradle and transmitting motion to the rollers through bevel gears. It is also stated that an entire cradle system may be given a traverse by means of fingers secured to a traverse rod and engaging a slot in the back of the cradle. Specifications 671,633 and 671,641 are referred to.
