Abstract
679,522. Balancing shafts. CAPO, L., and GOODBAR, I. Aug. 21, 1950, No. 20697/50. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Groups XXVI, XXXIII and XXXV] A shaft 1 carrying a rotor 2 has secured thereto one or more discs 3 with rolled-over edges forming annular chambers 8 partly filled with fusible material 4, such as lead or sealing-wax, and is balanced prior to installation by being rotated in spring-supported bearings 5 by air jets 10 substantially above the critical speed, the material 4 being liquefied by flame jets 9 so that it distributes in such a way as to effect balancing. The air and flame jets are then shut off and the shaft continues to rotate freely until the material 4 re-solidifies. Alternatively, the material 4 may be such as to be rendered fluid by means other than heat.
