Abstract
679,355. Combined clutches and brakes. FAIRWEATHER, W. C. (Singer Manufacturing Co.). May 11, 1951, No. 11128/51. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Group XXXIV] An electrically driven sewing machine has a driving clutch plate 23, a driven clutch plate 26, and a brake 27 mounted on a ring 33 pivoted at diametrically opposite points 34 to a member 35 hinged at 36 to the casing 11. The means for shifting the shaft 24 endwise to engage the clutch plate 26 with either the clutch 23 or the brake 27 comprises a sleeve 28 having threads 29 which co-operate with grooves in the hub12. The sleeve 28 is turned by a lever having a split hub 30 clamped upon the end of the sleeve. To adjust the spacing of the brake and clutch arrangement to take up wear the bolt 40 is turned to force the prongs 43 to ride up the saddle 48 and move the member 35 to the left. As the prongs ride over the saddle ridge the spring 51 moves the member 35 back to the right into a valley 44 between prongs so that the total distance the member 35 has been moved to the left is small. The bolt is then rotated by 90 degrees step until the clutch and brake plates are sandwiched in contact, but when the plates contact, the prongs 43 cannot be forced further to ride over the saddle for another 90 degrees step so that the member 35 and the plates are moved back and apart an adjusted distance equal to the depth of a valley 44.
