Abstract
679,132. Mixing appliances. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Feb. 12, 1951 [Nov. 10, 1949], No. 28852/49. Class 86 In a mixer of the type incorporating a rotary drum fitted with internal buckets the buckets are movable in relation to the drum in such a way that during their upward movement they have one edge bearing against or near the drum and can lift the material being mixed, but at other parts of their cycle they can move away from the drum. The buckets 1, Fig. 3, within the drum 5 of a concrete mixer are mounted on shafts 3 which are freely rotatable in bearings carried by one or both end walls of the drum so that the edges 6 of the buckets on the upwardly moving part of the drum 5 rest against the peripheral wall of the drum and at the top of the drum pivot under gravity so that the edges of the buckets in the downwardly moving part of the drum are spaced away from the wail. In Fig. 4, the shafts 3 carry arms 8 with cam followers 9 which run in a cam ring 10 fixed to the mixer frame, by which means the buckets can be made to swing at a given point in the revolution. The angular setting of the arms 8 may be varied for mixes of different consistency and the cam ring may be angularly adjusted to vary the timing of the tilting cycle of the buckets to give quicker mixing for a particular mix or to speed up discharge; the chain lines in Fig. 4, indicate a position of the cam ring suitable for discharging the mix. In an alternative arrangement, Figs. 5 and 6. (not shown), the buckets have alternately long and short shafts 3 having means to engage projections of different lengths near the top of the drum to produce differently timed tilting of alternate buckets and near the bottom of the drum a common cam is provided to swing all the buckets back into position with an edge adjacent the drum wall. A third projection may be provided which may be brought into position to cause all the buckets to tilt to cause discharge.
