Abstract

678,934. Filters. GENERAL MOTORS, Ltd. July 21, 1950 [Aug. 30, 1949], No. 22457/49. Class 46 [Also in Group XXIX] A liquid filter, e.g. for engine lubrication systems, comprises a casing containing a hollow filter element 4 and a pressure relief valve formed by a cup 7 carrying a flexible annulus 15 having apertures 16 adjacent surface of the annulus so that a predetermined pressure difference between the high and low pressure sides of the filter forces the annulus away from the apertures and allows liquid to byepass the filter. As shown, the annulus has a flange 21 ribbed at 22 and sealingly pressed on the filter container to prevent leakage. In modifications, the annulus is carried inside or outside two cup members fitted together and engaging, by an apertured dished portion at the bottom of the lower member, the inside of the central tube 6 of the filter element. Where the flow is inwards the annulus is inside and vice versa. In these modifications no sealing flange 21 is necessary.
