Abstract

1341116 Disposal oil filter GENERAL MOTORS Ltd 27 Jan 1972 [4 Feb 1971] 3909/71 Heading B1D A disposable oil filter of the screw-on, integral housing type for an I.C. engine comprises a housing having a thin-walled cup-like portion and a thick end plate 3 with inlets 6 and central outlet 7, enclosing an annular pleated filter element which is urged against a seal ring 20 of elastomeric material, ring 20 having an outer flange 24 serving as a non-return valve around inlets 6, castellations 23 (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) and inner flange 26 urged by spring 31 against plate 3 to act as a by-pass valve if the filter element clogs or oil is two viscous. In Fig. 1. the interior of the element is supported by an externally grooved plastics member 8 with end holes 11 and end plug 12 fitting into an end closure 14 having resilient arms 16 urging the element upwards. The element has individually sealed pleats. In Figs. 4 to 7 (not shown) the filter element has an internal perforate metal tube and various arrangements are illustrated which provide a seat on the top of the element for ring 20 and a support for the lower end of spring 31. In Fig. 6 an anti-drain baffle (45) is provided within the element, and in Fig. 7 flange 26 engages the lower edge of the threaded socket defining outlet 7 to minimise oil leakage between the socket and the spigot on to which it screws. Reference has been directed by the comptroller to Specification 982,466.
