Abstract
678,472. Control of A.C. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 8, 1950. [May 19, 1949] No. 11386/50. Class 38 (iii). [Also in Groups I and II] A waste disposal appliance of the type having a power operated comminuting mechanism comprises an interlock in the control system for the comminuting mechanism which is closed only when a predetermined minimum of water flows, and a relay which is closed after a time delay by the control system to cause operation of the comminuting mechanism. A further interlock may be provided in the control system which is closed when a removable waste receptacle is mounted on the casing. The waste disposal appliance shown comprises a casing 8 mounting an electric motor 7 which drives a waste material grinder of the type described in Specification 663,460, [Group II]. A waste receptacle 2, having a guard 31 mounted centrally on legs 32 within it, is removably mounted on the top part of the casing 8, insertion of the lower part 35 of the receptacle causing the contacts 55 of spring-loaded interlock switch 36 to close. As shown in Fig. 3, a flow responsive device 58 is fitted within the water line 57 such that the contacts 56 close when a predetermined minimum of water flows. When both interlocks are closed the solenoid 50 may be energized and contactor 52 closed after a suitable delay caused by a timer 54 thus starting the capacitor-start motor driving the grinder. A bimetallic strip overload trip 48 may be fitted.
