Abstract
678,387. Pneumatic dashpots. FISHER & LUDLOW, Ltd. Dec. 15, 1950 [Dec. 6, 1949], No. 31236/49. Class 108(iii) A cushioning device for use with power presses comprises a fixed outer cylinder 14, and an inner cylinder 16 having one end 23 formed as a piston, and a piston rod 19 fixed to the closed end of the outer cylinder 14 and carrying a piston 22 working within the inner cylinder 16, the working spaces of the inner and outer cylinders being connected by a passage 21 through the piston rod 19, and the space A between the two pistons 22, 23 being in communication with atmosphere. The lower die 11 of the press is carried by the closed end 18 of the inner cylinder 16. Facings 40 are provided on the periphery of the inner cylinder 16 to provide an annular passage between the cylinders 14, 16, through which air can pass (via holes 38) between atmosphere and the space A. An inspection hole is provided at 33 and a safety valve at 34. A connection is provided at 31 with a source of compressed air. The device is secured to the base 10 of the press by bolts at 36. In a modification, the bolts are replaced by an extension of the piston rod 19 which passes through a gland in the cylinder end 18, and is rigid with the base 10.
