Abstract
Phosphorus oxychloride is manufactured by subjecting phosphoric anhydride or its hydration products, e.g. ortho,- meta,- or pyro-phosphoric acid to a chlorinating reaction in the presence of carbon and, if desired, another reducing agent. The reaction tempertaure is 500 DEG -700 DEG C if carbon is used alone or 300 DEG -500 DEG C if carbon monoxide is used as additional reducing agent. Carbon tetrachloride or carbon oxychloride may be used as combined chlorinating and reducing agents. Wood charcoal, size 150-400m , is impregnated with dilute ortho-phosphoric acid, and the product, dried at 200 DEG C and dehydrated at 500 DEG C in an inert gas until the impregnant is substantially meta-phosphoric acid. The charcoal is fed continuously into a column at 600 DEG C and is p maintained in constant agitation by a counter-current of chlorinating and, if desired, reducing gas. Spent charcoal is continuously withdrawn and reimpregnated, while phosphorus oxychloride is separated from the resulting gases by condensation and rectified, and hydrochloric acid is recovered.
