Abstract
Zirconium is separated from contaminating hafnium by fractional distillation of the tetrachloride complexes with phosphorus oxychloride or phosphorus pentachloride in known manner as described for example in Specification 221,802, [Class 1 (3)], and the zirconium tetrachloride complex in vapour form is decomposed with carbon, which may be in a fluidized bed, at an elevated temperature, for example 800 DEG C. Carbon monoxide, phosphorus trichloride and zirconium tetrachloride are formed, and may be separated by distillation, the zirconium tetrachloride remaining in the distilling vessel. In a modification chlorine gas is also admitted to the carbon.
