Abstract

677,509. Moulding by dipping. METALLGES. AKT.-GES. March 6, 1951 [May 30, 1950], No. 5451/51. Class 87(ii) That part of the dipped article that is to be rolled up to form a rim has a film thickness which increases stepwise or nearly continuously from as thin an outer zone as possible through a comparatively still moderately thin intermediate zone up to a final comparatively thick film thickness. As shown, in making the article a former F is first dipped into a solution of coagulant up to the level A, then dipped into aqueous rubber dispersion up to level B (whereby a very thin skin is formed on the non-coagulant-coated part AB), then withdrawn from the dispersion until it is at the level C, where it is allowed to dwell to build up the article thickness on the part CE. The former is then lowered until the level is at D, and then withdrawn. The result is a thin portion AB, a not-so-thin portion AD, a thicker portion DC and the thick body portion CE. The former with the article thereon is then heated to dry the article, the rim is rolled up, and the article again heated. Further heating to dry may be effected after removal of the article from the former. The material used may be rubber, gutta percha, balata, polymers of chloroprene or butadiene or natural or synthetic resins.
